Fire Prevention – Reducing Risks
The Phoenix Fire Department Prevention Division recommends that all communities and homeowners take steps to reduce the likelihood of fire, the spread of fire and to improve firefighters’ ability to contain fire. The recent tragic fires in California have generated increased interest in assessing wildfire danger in Phoenix to reduce the likelihood of fire spreading.
Our community’s desert environment provides several fire prevention and control challenges that we, as homeowners, should all be aware of and take steps to protect our properties. Some insurance companies are denying coverage for fire damage if the risks are not managed by the homeowner.
Fires spread quickly, particularly if it is windy. A cigarette thrown from a car on one of our overpasses could easily set dry plants, fallen pine needles, or flammable materials in someone’s yard on fire; “deadfall” plant materials, shake shingle roofs or a wooden pergola can spread the flames. They also cautioned about fireworks, and sparks from vehicles or yard equipment. Most fires start from an ember that can travel as much as a mile on a windy day.
